Influence/Inspiration Post-Simon Yotsuya
Getting back into the swing of these posts with a series of Japanese doll artists. They are all influenced by Hans Bellmer and were an inspiration for Super Dollfies and asian ball-jointed dolls. First is the most famous, Simon Yotsuya.
If his work looks familiar it’s because he designed the gynoids for Ghost in the Shell II: Innocence. The amazing story is that right after Mamoru Oshii found out he would be working on GITSII, he went to an exhibit and saw some originals photographs by Bellmer, who had been a big influence on him. As he looked at the dolls he saw that they were perfect synthetic girls, so he decided that they would inform the artistic direction for the film. He searched for a doll maker to design the gynoids and chose Yotsuya because he felt he best captured Bellmer’s spirit.
